The inmate who escaped from an Orange County jail was apprehended in Lake Forest. William Woodin, 39 formerly of Newport Beach was caught after a short foot pursuit by officers, 24 hours after escaping.
Woodin was first arrested by Irvine Police on October 23, 2011 for attempted theft from Nordstrom. Woodin pleaded guilty to petty theft and giving a false name to a police officer.
Due to the low level crime, Woodin was allowed to be on a kitchen work crew which is how he ultimately made his escape after breaking the kitchen window. Orange County Sheriff spokesman Jim Amormino said the capture was the result of “good old-fashioned detective work.” This was the first escape from Theo Lacy Jail in 20 years.
As a result of Woodin's escape, he is subject to additional criminal charges. He could be charged with escaping from a correctional facility, felony vandalism as well as a probation violation. All said, he now could face several years in prison. Hopefully, he had time to consult with an Orange County Criminal Defense Attorney while on the lam.
