Woman Arrested for Posing as Attorney

An Elk Grove woman was arrested after she allegedly represented herself as an attorney to an Orange County jail inmate. Prosecutors say, Ellen Anise Rowland, 56 accepted $1,700 from an inmate's father to provide Orange County criminal defense services.

When Rowland went to the Orange County jail, she allegedly provided the deputies with a false name and bar number of an actual licensed attorney. The attorney had no knowledge the license was bring used by Rowland.

Rowland is charged with one misdemeanor court of unauthorized practice of law and one felony count of possession of a controlled substance. According to law enforcement, she had Vicodin pills in her vehicle without a valid prescription. If convicted, Rowland faces 16 months in state prison.
